Beyond ‘Me’… The Art of Serving Others

I had the honor of standing up in my friend’s wedding this weekend. As a bridesmaid, I had the privilege and responsibility to serve the bride and I was happy to do it. I was laser-focused on doing all I could to make sure her big day was as perfect as possible, and all her needs were met. I was surrounded by the rest of the bridal party who shared these common goals. We were available, willing, and motivated to accomplish the day this couple dreamed of. Not only did the bride and groom enjoy a beautiful wedding, but those of us who were serving them also got to partake in their joy. Here’s why…

SERVICE TO OTHERS DRAWS OUR FOCUS OUTWARD

When we serve others, we begin to notice needs outside of our own and we are compelled to meet them as best we can. These acts of kindness have a true biological reaction that produces joy in our hearts. A win-win situation occurs.

SERVICE TO OTHERS REFLECTS OUR FOCUS UPWARD

When we serve others, we become a reflection of God’s love. Each act of service points toward heaven as an echo of The Lord’s unfailing devotion and provision. Jesus himself came down from paradise to be of service to the people around him. Mark 10:45 (ESV) states this clearly:

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

SERVICE TO OTHERS ADJUSTS OUR FOCUS INWARD

When we serve others, we become distinctly aware of our focus on ourselves. We begin to gain perspective and better understand just how much we should be pouring into ‘me’ and how much we should be pouring into those around us. Because we are extending kindness, we can accurately calibrate our hearts.

So, go beyond yourselves, friends. Seek opportunities to serve, and enjoy the sweet fruits of your selfless labor!
